The Passaic County Short-Term Processing Facility in Wayne handles the brief intake, commitment, and transport stage. Once Bergen receives the person, Bergen becomes the source for its own confinement, physical discharge, transfer, and property records. Passaic retains its Wayne and court-related records.
A Bergen custody episode can end in several ways. A person may leave for the community under a court order, bond, a time-served sentence, or another lawful release basis. The person may instead transfer to the New Jersey Department of Corrections after sentencing. Another jail, federal authority, or immigration authority may take custody. “Released from Bergen” therefore describes the end of Bergen custody, not always freedom from all custody.

The Bergen current inmate lookup is the first facility-specific check. Search the person with the live fields and preserve the spelling, identifiers, date, and result. A current match supports Bergen custody when checked. An absent match does not identify what happened next, and no official Bergen 24-hour or 72-hour released archive was verified.
- Confirm that the Passaic Sheriff routed the person to Bergen rather than Hudson or a same-day Wayne discharge.
- Search Bergen’s current locator and compare all identifiers shown. Similar names alone are not enough.
- Review the Passaic case in the PROMIS/Gavel public criminal portal for the disposition, judgment, sentence, or commitment.
- Check New Jersey VINE for the named person and reported custody event, while treating a notification as a lead.
- Request Bergen’s final release or transfer record, including the out-of-custody time, authority, type, and destination.
- If Bergen reports NJDOC transfer, search the state record and read Date Out-of-Custody rather than calling the county transfer a release.

Bergen says OPRA requests must be written and may be delivered, mailed, or electronically sent. OPRA is the New Jersey Open Public Records Act. Use Bergen’s current form and instructions because the applicable process can change.

A focused request identifies the full legal name and aliases, date of birth, SBI or booking number if known, approximate booking date, and Passaic case number. Ask for the existing final custody or release record, including admission time, custody agency, final out-of-custody time, release authority or type, transfer destination, and final custody disposition. Request a Bergen-created booking photograph as a separate item tied to the exact booking.
Do not route Bergen-created records through the Passaic portal merely because the prosecution began in Passaic. Passaic can supply its own Wayne intake, commitment, transport, or transfer material. Bergen must answer for its own confinement and physical endpoint. A two-custodian request can be necessary to reconstruct one continuous episode.
No fixed fee for this specific release record was verified. Current law, format, volume, and the custodian’s estimate control. Ask for electronic copies and any nonexempt, segregable portion if part of the record is withheld. Juvenile, sealed, expunged, medical, victim, security, and other protected information may be restricted.
Bergen Regional Release Role
Bergen County Corrections and Rehabilitation Center is a regional partner county jail operated by the Bergen County Sheriff. For Passaic matters, its key role is physical custody after the brief Wayne stage, usually for male remands. It is not the former Passaic County Jail, and it does not replace the Passaic court as the source of the criminal disposition.

After a transfer from Wayne, property associated with Bergen custody is handled through Bergen. Passaic’s published policy states that property travels with a transferred person. If an item may have remained with Passaic, contact the current facility first. After verification and the confined person’s approval, Passaic Sheriff staff provides further instructions.

Bergen NJDOC Release Transfers
A state-prison commitment changes the search system. If the Passaic judgment or Bergen release record shows transfer to NJDOC, use the New Jersey Department of Corrections offender search. County of Commitment can tie the state record to the Passaic prosecution. It does not identify the current facility by itself.
NJDOC’s Date Out-of-Custody is the defined date released from state custody. Current Max Release Date is a calculated future endpoint, while Current Parole Eligibility Date marks eligibility under State Parole Board policy. Neither projected field proves that the person left. NJDOC also warns that it updates biweekly and may not update released or paroled records after departure. Most records leave the public search one year after completion of the custodial term, subject to the system’s continuing-term exceptions.
For a simple Bergen community discharge, NJDOC is not the first source. It covers state commitments, not an ordinary county-jail release. Use Bergen’s record and the Passaic court disposition first. Change systems only when the record points to state custody.

Bergen Releases to ICE Custody
A Bergen record may use release language even when another authority takes physical custody. An ICE detainer is not proof that ICE already holds the person. ICE describes it as notice of intent to assume custody, a request for impending-release information, and a request for added detention tied to the handoff. The Bergen destination field is therefore critical.
If Bergen identifies an ICE pickup, use the ICE Online Detainee Locator. It searches with an A-number and country of birth, or exact name, country of birth, and optional date of birth. ICE says the locator includes current detainees and people released from ICE custody within a limited 60-day period. It is not a permanent release archive, and a missing result does not prove community return.
Community release requires both parts of the chain. Bergen’s record shows that Bergen custody ended and names the destination when available. ICE information shows whether immigration custody followed or later ended. If the public locator is unclear or outside its short window, use the ICE information line or a suitable records process.
Passaic Bergen Release History
Passaic County’s regional model grew from a shared-services consolidation. The county’s budget presentation says the Bergen arrangement began in 2021. It attributes the change to the age of the old jail and an estimated replacement cost approaching one billion dollars. Passaic ended overnight confinement in 2023 and uses Wayne as a processing and transport hub.
That history explains why Bergen is central to many Passaic release searches. A Passaic arrest can create Wayne records, Bergen confinement and discharge records, and a Passaic court case. One request sent only to Passaic may stop at the transfer. One request sent only to Bergen may not contain the legal disposition. The split is a feature of the current system, not duplicate paperwork.
It also explains why old pages naming an active Passaic County Jail are unreliable. The current official path runs through Wayne, Bergen, and Hudson. A careful release check follows the actual physical custodian and ends only when the final destination is known.
