Passaic County Short-Term Processing Releases
The Passaic County Sheriff's Office operates the Wayne site as a short-term processing, commitment, and transport facility for adults. It keeps no overnight population. Males normally move to Bergen County, while females normally move to Hudson County. Operational needs can also send some males to Hudson. An eligible person may instead begin discharge after a same-day court appearance.
Those outcomes create two different records paths. A Wayne discharge is best confirmed by Passaic's dated final processing or discharge entry and the Passaic court disposition. A Wayne transfer is not a release into the community. The transfer record should identify Bergen, Hudson, NJDOC, or another destination, after which that receiving agency becomes the source for later physical discharge.
Confirm a Passaic County Processing Release
There is no Passaic roster, recent-release list, 24-hour window, 72-hour window, or released-photo archive. The Sheriff's official inmate-search page instead routes the public to Bergen and Hudson. - Determine whether Wayne discharged the person or sent the person to Bergen or Hudson. Save the name, identifiers, date, and source checked.
- Review the Passaic criminal case or judgment. A release order, dismissal, time-served sentence, probation sentence, or state commitment points to the next agency.
- If a partner locator shows the person, that supports current custody. If no row appears, request the final discharge or transfer record rather than inferring release.
- Use NJDOC for a state commitment and New Jersey VINE as a custody-event and notification source. Neither replaces the Wayne or partner record.
- When another authority appears as the destination, check that system before calling the event a community release.
A final agency record is stronger than roster absence. VINE can corroborate a custody change, while the court record explains why a change was ordered. Exact release time, type, and destination still come from the agency that completed the physical event.

Passaic County holds the records it created at Wayne, including intake, commitment, court transport, transfer, same-day discharge, and a Passaic-created booking image when one exists. New Jersey's Open Public Records Act, N.J.S.A. 47:1A-1 et seq., governs the request framework, subject to exclusions and redaction.

A useful request names the person and custody episode with the full legal name, aliases, date of birth, SBI or booking number if known, approximate booking date, case number, and agency. Ask for the existing final record, including admission and out-of-custody date and time, authority or type, final disposition, and any transfer destination. Request the booking photograph as a separate item tied to that booking.
No fixed Passaic fee for a release record or photo was verified. The current portal and any lawful estimate control cost and timing. Juvenile, sealed, expunged, medical, victim, security, investigatory, probation, and pretrial material may be withheld or redacted. Ask for nonexempt segregable parts and the legal basis for any denial.
Passaic County Same-Day Release Path
The Sheriff publishes one distinctive Wayne timing detail. An eligible person admitted at about 6:30 to 10:30 a.m., subject to change, may stay briefly for court that day. After the appearance, the person may transfer to a partner jail or begin discharge. This path can produce a Passaic County release without any overnight local roster entry.
The published window does not promise departure by a set hour. No official exit, weekend schedule, waiting area, or transport arrangement was found. Confirm the result through the Wayne final entry and the day's court disposition. A court order explains the legal basis, but a second hold or transfer can change the physical outcome.

Property After a Passaic County Transfer
The Sheriff's rule is direct: personal property accompanies a transferred person to Bergen or Hudson. The receiving facility then handles retrieval related to its custody. Property location can therefore offer a practical clue about which agency took control after Wayne, but it does not by itself prove release or present custody.
If an item may remain with Passaic, contact the current facility first. After the request is verified and the confined person approves release of the property, Passaic staff provides instructions. Do not assume the Wayne site still holds an item after a documented transfer.

ICE Handoffs from Passaic County Processing
A facility record may use release language when another authority takes custody. ICE describes a detainer as a notice or request connected to assuming custody, including a request for impending-release information and up to 48 hours of added detention. A detainer is not itself proof of current ICE custody. A completed handoff, however, means the person did not yet return to the community.
Read the Wayne or partner record for the destination. Then use the ICE Online Detainee Locator for current detention or the limited recent-release period. ICE says ODLS includes people released from its custody within the last 60 days. Older or unclear information can be routed through ICE DRIL at 1-888-351-4024, Monday through Friday excluding holidays, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern.

Why Passaic County Ended Overnight Detention
Passaic's current corrections model grew from local consolidation. A county budget presentation says shared services with Bergen began in 2021. It attributes the change to the old jail's age and an estimated replacement cost approaching $1 billion. Overnight detention ended in 2023, leaving Wayne as a processing and transport hub for Bergen and Hudson placements.
The old Marshall Street jail is therefore history, not a fourth current facility or roster source. A page that still treats it as an active Passaic County jail conflicts with the Sheriff's present system. The 2025 county budget presentation documents the consolidation and explains why the current release record can be divided among Passaic, a partner jail, and the court.
This history changes the search itself. A person can pass through Wayne, appear in a partner locator, move to NJDOC after sentencing, or leave after same-day court. The official record must be followed at each handoff instead of forcing every case into an obsolete county-jail model.
Passaic County Processing Facility Role
The Wayne facility serves adults committed through Passaic County before discharge or transfer. It is not a state prison and does not calculate NJDOC sentence dates. If the court commits someone to state custody, use the NJDOC offender search after the transfer. Date Out-of-Custody is the state system's actual-release field, while Current Max Release Date and Current Parole Eligibility Date are projections or eligibility markers.

NJDOC says its public offender search updates biweekly and may omit work release, furlough, or residential community status. Released or paroled records are not updated after departure, and most records leave the public search one year after the custodial term ends. New Jersey VINE can send custody-change notices from participating agencies, but it is not a certified discharge archive. Likewise, a vanished partner row is only a lead.
